Cerberus


The Cerberus goes to both Greek and Roman mythologies and is a creature being that of a “Dog” but with three heads not the usual one. The role of this creature be that of many a common dog to guard and protect. Its role is to protect the Gates of Hedes, being that of the underworld. Hedes is also a God the God of the underworld. The role is to protect ones who have crossed the river Styx from escape. The image has remained pretty well constant even into modern times.

Cerberus is the child of Lernaean Hydra , water creature that if one head was to be removed two more would come to take its place. This creature was said to be very toxic so much so that its breath and even tracks left behind could cause death. The other being that of the Sphinx, this be depicted as a creature with the body of a lioness and the face of a woman.


Cerberus is common image in Greek Mythology is that of having three heads, the mane of live serpents and a snake’s tail. It is said that the three heads might represent in Birth, Youth and Old Age. Other theories go to the heads representing in Past, Present and Future. The thing that is constant is that Cerberus is employed as Hades loyal watch dog.

Medieval writings report that Cerberus openly stalks the Earth Plane roaming amongst man, said to possess a violent nature. The eyes are red, the coat black, with claw like hands to capture spirits and fray them.
